Academic Writing: Mastering Citation and Referencing
All academic writing requires students to use in-text citation and referencing in order to acknowledge where their research comes from.
This resource is for learners on pre-sessional university courses, either at undergraduate or graduate level, and for teachers who are teaching the fundamentals of research. Its aim is to introduce learners to the fundamental citation and referencing conventions, and to explain how to integrate sources into academic writing.
With each unit focusing on particular skills, comprehensive practice in the following key aspects of academic writing is provided:
- Key paraphrasing techniques
- In-text citation from a variety of authorial and academic sources
- Writing quotations
- Synthesising sources
- Evaluating and selecting suitable sources
- Writing reference lists that incorporate a variety of academic sources
Paul Murphy is a specialist in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP). He has taught at the University of Glasgow, Glasgow International College and the British Council. He currently teaches EAP at Mahidol University International College in Thailand.
